Citizenship

Ready to become a citizen?

Most permanent residents can apply after five years, or three if married to a U.S. citizen. We check your history first, then file your N-400 and get you ready for the interview and the civics test.

Included in the flat fee

  • A review of your travel, taxes and any arrests before we file

  • Form N-400 and the evidence it needs

  • A fee-waiver or reduced-fee request, if you qualify

  • Two practice interviews, with the civics questions

  • The civics test in your language, if your age and years here allow it

Check these before you apply

A few things in your past can turn a citizenship application into a problem. We look at each one before anything is filed.

  • Long trips abroad

Trips of six months or more can break the continuous residence the law requires.

  • Arrests or tickets

Even a dismissed case has to be disclosed. We get the court records first.

  • Taxes

Unfiled or unpaid taxes come up at the interview. Many can be fixed before you apply.

  • Selective Service

Men who lived here between 18 and 26 may need to show they registered, or explain why not.

Citizenship questions

Can I take the test in Spanish?

If you’re 50 or older and have been a resident for 20 years, or 55 or older with 15 years, you can take the civics test in your own language with an interpreter. Otherwise the interview is in English, and we practice it with you.

What if I can’t afford the USCIS fee?

If your household income is low or you receive certain benefits, you may qualify for a fee waiver or a reduced fee. We check at the consult and file the request with your application.

Will my children become citizens too?

Children under 18 with a green card who live with you usually become citizens automatically when you naturalize. We can then request their certificates or passports.
